Grrr, I’m doing it again. I’m sat here in front of my computer, trying to work out what some piece of code does. Technically this should take me all of about five minutes to figure out, but so far it’s taken oooh, three days?
Problem is, I just can’t seem to concentrate on the problem. I’m not interested. Basically, I don’t care. I know I have to get this working sooner or later, but even so I’m having a hard time applying myself to it. I end up re-reading the same bit of code or relevant documentation over and over again, without actually paying any attention.
Or I end up being distracted by doing things like this ;)
I think the issue with this is that of working with other peoples code, or rather having to fix other peoples work. I get absolutely zero satisfaction from it, as it’s just one problem after another. Even though you overcome one issue, you just know that there is going to another right around the corner waiting to bite you in the ass, and the likeliness is that it’ll be much more difficult than the last one to figure out.
Ah well, gotta stick at it I guess. At least the money is good :)
Yeah I know that feeling buddy, I sit reading documentation surround telephone systems ACD routing,DTMF menu’s etc. Its just not interesting and yes I also find myself re-reading the same piece of documentation time and time again until I give up and decide I can put the job off till tomorrow (when hopefully I’ll be able to concentrate a little more).

Someone in IRC yesterday pointed me in the direction of an excellent essay on overcoming procrastination at work, it’s worth checking out:

Seems like good advice, although it reminds me of the kind of stuff they used to tell you to do at school :)
