Jury service ended up being a no-go - basically they only pay around £50 maximum allowance per day, and so if you’re earning well over that and aren’t being paid while you’re away from work then they just discharge you. Which er, was me. I felt like a bit of a twat having to duck out from it (disappointed too) but I can’t really afford to lose all that much over the next two weeks. Ah well.
Today also seems to be the day for bad news. First my mum was really upset earlier, turns out one of her closest friends’ son (same age as me, into similar stuff) was killed on Saturday in a motorcycling accident. He’d just been offered a really good job, life was going great for him etc., and now he’s dead. So she’s upset because obviously her friend is totally distraught, and she’s also freaking because “it could have been me”. I don’t ride a motorbike, but it just goes to show that you never know what can happen.
Secondly a friend of mine from Uni has split up with his long time fiancée - they were due to be married at some point soon, seemed like a fantastic couple and looked really happy together. Seems that wasn’t totally the case, and so they’ve split up just a few days ago and he’s understandably gutted about it.
Bleh. Makes my problems regarding money and other ‘regular’ day to day shit seem pretty damn insignificant really. It could all be a hell of a lot worse.
Unfortunately shit happens and there’s nothing much you can do about it, however when shit that bad happens people are often understandably upset by it :(
On the bright side at least you got out of Jury service, seems a bit dumb that rule though as it means that only the low paid or unemployed get to sit on a jury. Seems a little bit dumb to me, but hey I don’t run the country, or do I? ;P
Well more bad news is that I seem to have caught this fecking fly type thing and yesterday i felt a little ill, today I felt terrible and I’m not looking forward to tomorrow at all :(

As for jury service, I guess it depends on whether the company you work for is prepared to pay you something while you’re away from work or not.
It is a daft system though - even the woman at the court agreed and said that she reckoned everyone should be paid in full by the government whatever it is they stand to lose by being away from work.
