I’ve been really into this band called ‘Ricaine’ as of late. I first came across a track of theirs on the Zerobros’ “Animal Rights Benefit” CD compilation a few years back, and only recently got around to downloading some of their stuff for a proper listen. I don’t actually recall what prompted me to remember them, but anyway…
They are (or er, were) fucking awesome.
Here’s a bit of background, courtesy of Wikipedia:
Ricaine was a rock band from Melbourne, Australia, that released several albums. The group was made up of Neil Thomason (guitar and vocals), Brett O’Rielly (bass) and Tom Jackman (drums).
The trio played its first show in December 1994, followed by a debut release in early 1995 in way of split 7″ with Baseball aka Cameron Potts. 1997 saw the group spend a month in the United States, playing shows in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, as well as the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. While in Chicago they spent a week recording their second full-length release, The Clarity of Distance, with US engineer Bob Weston of Shellac fame.
The band has since broken up.
There’s also a short interview here, but that’s more or less your lot save for a couple of brief reviews on one or two of their releases. Where am I going with this? Well, while there’s not much I can do to correct the lack of details I can at least hook you up with a couple of MP3s so you can check them out and make up your own mind!
Have a listen - chances are if you like Shellac, Jesus Lizard and so on you’ll be into them.
